JACK'S PAPERS FIND A PERMANENT HOME AT
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA BANCROFT LIBRARY
One of Jack Van Hiele's best friends, Jack von Euw, Curator of the Bancroft Library Pictorial Collection, has graciously received Jack Van Hiele's records, diaries, correspondence and business papers for permanent keeping.
As the old saying goes, one dies three times: when you take your last breath, when you're buried, and finally, when you're forgotten. What Jack von Euw has done for Jack Van Hiele is perhaps the ultimate gift for an old friend - ensuring he will not be forgotten.
Jack Van Hiele was fond of saying, "...you never know..." He believed in circumstances, coincidences, finding positive things in unexpected places.
One can imagine, sometime far in the future, a young (or older) person chancing onto the Triangle Gallery records at the Bancroft Library and be fascinated by this small contemporary art gallery that enriched San Francisco's cultural life for over half a century. And as she looks through Jack's papers, I can also imagine Jack smiling wistfully and saying, "... well, you never know..."
Thank you, Jack von Euw, for keeping Jack's legacy alive.
